Today we left Paekakariki and travelled to Otaki. The girls participated in a traditional Maori
welcoming ceremony. The girls learned a
song in Maori:
Tangihia nga mate
Tangihia nga mate
Kua ngaro ki te po
Moi mai I te
rangimarie,
Moi mai I te
rangimarie.
Tena ra kotu
Rau rangatira ma,
Kui ma, koro ma,
Hine ma, tama ma,
Me nga iwi o te motu
nei,
Me nga iwi o te motu
nei-i!
The chief of the Tainui tribe was so impressed with their
dedication to memorizing the song and with their presentation of it! I wish we could’ve filmed or taken a picture,
but pictures aren’t allowed in a marae- the Maori tribal community center.
We spent the afternoon at the Maori University, Te Wanannga
O Raukawa learning about ancient weaving and tribal carvings. The girls put on quite the fashion show wearing
the ancient woven shawls.
The girls were also given the opportunity to play wooden
instruments and learn about the carving process of instruments and ancient
weapons.
We ended our afternoon learning how to play a version of NZ
tag and net ball. I think these girls
could give any native kiwi a good run for her money at a net ball game. Anthony even commented on our girls’
athleticism. Go Honeybears!!!! #HBN
We’ll finish the evening with a community meal and learning
more about the Maori people and their culture.
